about

The story of Motorjoke is basically that of a cult band. A band that made an impression and influenced a lot o people but never became well known.

Motorjoke never really made it. They were the younger version of the Swedish hardcore pioneers Krunch, coming from the same small municipal town of Timrå and as long as Krunch existed they somehow got stuck in their backwater. When Krunch broke up in 1989 Rille Himmerlid took over the drums from his younger brother Rolle who switched to the guitar. That lineup recorded Tokfursten. In Sweden few understood the greatness of Tokfursten but, like Krunch, it was the in the US, UK and Germany that the audience took their strange punk/postpunk mix to their hearts. They got attention from College Radio in the US and the album sold quite well.

The second album – Barflugan – was in a league of its own, lyric based with complicated guitars figures with a jazz feel and the songs were more like stories with musical illustrations. The Swedish understood and appreciated the interesting and sometimes humorous lyric but not the music and abroad they did not understand it at all. The albums also suffered from being the last Massproduktion-album on LP and have therefore been quite forgotten. Today it sounds quite unique and both its lyrical and musical ambitions have few comparisons today.

Despite the lack of success for Barflugan the band continued for two more years writing songs and building a small but devoted following for their great live act. As the band consisted of four childhood friends playing together the magic broke when Rille moved to Uppsala for studies. Not meeting all the time meant that the band lost its energy and slowly faded away. And Anders success with Krämen, Giraffer & Andra Saker- his rock-for-kids-project that still is active, involving members of Garmarna, Lars Bygdéns band and Crompojkarna – meant that Motorjoke was put on hold for good.

In 2009 their eccentric guitar player, Thomas Holmberg, whose guitar figures was the foundation of the bands songwriting, passed away. We dedicate this compilation to him.

It is with great pride we now re-release all the bands recordings, re-mastered and with lyrics and liner notes.
